The House's unusual evening session was meant to focus on deciding whether Attorney General Merrick Garland should be held in contempt of Congress.

"Are any Democrats on this committee employing Judge Juan Merchan's daughter?" Rep. Greene inquired, referring to the judge overseeing Donald Trump's hush money trial.

"What does that have to do with Merrick Garland?" Rep. Crockett asked in response.

"I believe your fake eyelashes might be interfering with your reading," remarked the outspoken Georgia Republican.

Ms. Greene's outburst occurred during an already tense hearing, leading to nearly an hour of disorder in the committee.

The lawmakers argued and exchanged verbal blows, causing Chairman James Comer to struggle to contain the chaos.

Ms. Greene persisted in her criticism, this time targeting another Democrat, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez, even after the left-wing lawmaker condemned the right-wing legislator's "disgusting" and "unacceptable" comments about Ms. Crockett.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez swiftly fired back at Greene, condemning her for attacking another person's physical appearance.

The Republican taunted the progressive Democrat, asking if her feelings had been hurt.

"Oh, girl, don't even play," Ms. Ocasio-Cortez retorted, prompting her counterpart to mockingly add, "Oh, really, baby girl?"

The back-and-forth continued, with Ms. Greene agreeing to strike her words from the record. However, she did not agree to apologize to Ms. Crockett, further angering the Democratic camp.

 

When prompted, Ms. Ocasio-Cortez declined to engage in a debate with Ms. Greene, prompting the Republican's final derogatory remark: "Yeah, you don't have enough intelligence."

Mr. Comer agreed that Ms. Greene's insult ultimately did not violate House rules, leaving Ms. Crockett puzzled by the ruling.

"Wouldn't discussing someone's bleach blond, poorly built physique be considered avoiding personal attacks?" Rep. Crockett asked the chairman.

After further disputes, the hearing gradually calmed down, and the panel voted to permit Ms. Greene to resume speaking.
