"Pope Francis to Lead Easter Vigil Ceremony After Unexpectedly Missing Good Friday, Vatican Announces"
"The Vatican has affirmed that Pope Francis will oversee the Easter Vigil service on Saturday evening. This decision comes after he opted, as a health precaution, to forego participation in the Good Friday procession at the Colosseum at the eleventh hour."
As per the Vatican's daily bulletin, it has been confirmed that Francis will guide the extensive vigil within the confines of St. Peter's Basilica. This occasion marks one of the most significant and reverent events in the Catholic liturgical calendar. Scheduled to commence at 7:30 p.m. local time, the service typically spans two hours, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus and featuring the sacrament of baptism for eight adult converts.
Having undergone a partial lung removal in his youth, the 87-year-old Francis has been contending with respiratory issues throughout the winter season. These challenges have hindered his ability to engage in prolonged speech.
He has postponed certain audiences and frequently requested an assistant to deliver portions of his speeches orally. However, he completely forewent his Palm Sunday homily and, on Friday, made a last-minute decision to remain at home instead of leading the Way of the Cross procession at the Colosseum, which reenacts the crucifixion of Christ.
The Vatican provided a concise explanation, stating that the decision was taken to "preserve his health" in anticipation of the lengthy vigil service on Saturday and his even more demanding commitments on Easter Sunday. The pope is set to lead a morning Easter Mass in St. Peter's Square and deliver his Urbi et Orbi ("to the city and the world") address, offering prayers for an end to global crises.
Although Francis also missed the cold Good Friday procession last year due to recovering from bronchitis, his unexpected absence from this year's event prompted concern. Everything was arranged for his participation, with his chair set up on the platform and aides readying for his arrival. However, just five minutes before the scheduled start time, the Vatican announced his decision not to attend.
Alongside his respiratory issues, Francis underwent a procedure to remove a portion of his large intestine in 2021 and experienced two hospitalizations last year. One hospitalization was to address intestinal scar tissue resulting from previous surgeries related to diverticulosis, which causes bulges in the intestinal wall. Additionally, due to deteriorating knee ligaments, he has relied on a wheelchair or cane for mobility for nearly two years.
In his newly released memoir, titled "Life: My Journey Through History," Francis emphasized that he is not grappling with any health issues necessitating resignation. He reiterated his commitment to various ongoing projects, expressing his determination to see them through to completion.
